The Friends of Western (FOW) had its origins in late June 2002 when a group consisting of Staff and Health Care Professionals working at Western Hospital and ordinary community members informally came together to resist the sale of Western Hospital.

Since that initial period, the FOW has undergone a transition from a group whose focus was primarily to prevent the sale of the Hospital and has now evolved into supporting the new private consortium in its endeavours to maintain an acute hospital facility for the service of the people of the western coastal strip and neighbouring suburbs of Adelaide.

The immediate need was to promote the continued existence of the hospital services and the excellence of those services to our community.


Our current role includes:-

  • Fundraising and financing the purchase of essential patient related equipment for use by the hospital and patients within our community.

  • The management of all equipment purchased by FOW, which provides potential donors with the certainty that the equipment will remain in community ownership.

  • Ensuring that a consumer/community opinion is voiced to the Board of Management of Western Hospital.


The Friends of Western Board consists of local elected members as well as:

  • Western Hospital Chief Executive Officer.


We invite you to become a part of the Membership of the Friends of Western Hospital. For a $15 membership fee, or $25 per family, you will be kept informed quarterly via newsletter of the new community initiatives of the hospital.
