Day Surgery
Day Patient Admission
Western Hospital's Day Surgery Unit is a dedicated and self contained unit specifically designed for people undergoing procedures which do not require an overnight stay in hospital. Most patients are discharged within a few hours of their procedure.
Admission times at Western Hospital vary and are usually arranged by your doctor at the time of booking your procedure.
We request that in order to minimise the waiting times on the day of your admission that you forward your pre-admission forms prior to your admission day. You can either personally deliver these forms to us or post to:
PO Box 81 Henley Beach SA 5022

A typical day surgery experience
You will be escorted to the Day Surgery Unit by one of the Hospital Ward Assistants.
A Nursing Staff Member will introduce her/himself and commence your nursing admission. This will include weighing you, taking your temperature, pulse and blood pressure. If you have not completed a General Health Questionnaire he/she will ask you to do so.
You may have a short wait prior to going down to the Theatre Suite. Please make yourself comfortable in the lounge area and read, or watch television if you wish during this time. Nursing staff on the ward should be able to give you information regarding the time/duration of your surgery/procedure and your approximate time of discharge.
Relatives/friends who will be escorting you home may either wait in our comfortable lounge area or The Shoppe (located in the hospital foyer). Alternatively they may wish to go home and our friendly staff will ring them following your surgery to advise on a pick-up time.
Details of common day surgery procedures are listed below. If your procedure is not listed below, please consult your doctor for details on what you can expect:
The day after surgery/procedure a follow-up phone call will be made by Nursing Staff on the ward, to check your progress since discharge.
